The resulting attempt causes the one rewriting the book great pain, their body overheating and vein-like markings appearing from the arm they’re writing with to envelop their body. Zeref’s books are written in “Demonic Scriptures” which are nearly impossible for a human to alter and rewrite, even if they could they would be corrupted by it and plunged into darkness. They are also linked to their creator Zeref, should he or even the books perishes, that book's demon is also killed. The books possess a powerful Organic Link with its Demon, should the book be damaged, so too will that Demon receive the same amount of damage. The books are archives of Zeref’s research and creations, such as the Eclipse Gate, Etherious and spells that anyone can utilise or summon from its pages.

On the front cover, there is a picture of a glowing eye in darkness with several wavy lines spiraling inwards towards it. It has Zeref's name written in large black letters on the cover and the spine. is shown as a slightly tatty volume with various rips and tears in the cover. Not much is known about the appearance of each book, but the book containing E.N.D.
